Energy Law

LogoEnergy is one of our fastest-growing practice areas.  As a firm we believe that diversifying our state's sources of energy and increasing our reliance on energy efficiency are key building blocks for our state's future economic prosperity and its quality of life.

We represent environmental groups in all of the major electric cases before the Michigan Public Service Commission - including renewable energy, energy efficiency, power supply, and general rate cases. Last year, our work with these groups helped persuade the Commission to reduce the renewable energy surcharge proposed by one of the state's investor-owned electric utilities by $189 million over the life of the utility's renewable energy plan.

We also advise renewable energy developers in contract, business, zoning, and regulatory matters. We negotiate oil and natural gas leases for landowners to ensure that the agreements are economically fair and protective of their property. We represent local governments dealing with all manner of energy issues, from fly ash disposal to low-level radioactive waste to the regulation of sour gas. In addition to the Public Service Commission cases, we have litigated energy issues ranging from enrvironmental impacts to land use to public health issues.
