Consumers Energy Company Reaches Deal to Go "Coal-Free" by 2025

8,000 MW of solar generation is a key component of CECo's plan to go "coal free" by 2025.

Consumers Energy Company’s latest case for approval of its Integrated Resource Plan (MPSC Case No. U-21090) settled on April 20th, 2022. Consumers and stakeholders have agreed to close their last remaining coal units, Campbell Units 1, 2, and 3, by mid-2025. This will make Consumers Energy the first large investor owned utility in the upper Midwest to go “coal-free”.

To replace the capacity from closing these units, CECo has proposed to add to its existing natural gas-fired generation, as well as add 8,000 MW of solar generation by 2040.
