Mackinac Island Joins Citizens Group in Line 5 Fight

Last week the City of Mackinac Island filed papers to join the challenge initiated last summer by the Straits of Mackinac Alliance against the MDEQ’s decision to issue permits to Enbridge for the installation of 22 anchor supports to prop up the aging Line 5 petroleum pipeline which lies under the waters of the Straits of Mackinac. Among the flurry of recent lame-duck activity in the Michigan Legislature was SB 1210, a bill sponsored by Senator Tom Casperson (R – Escanaba), which was aimed squarely at the tiny, pastoral township of Metamora, located near the center of Michigan’s thumb. Under Metamora’s glacially-formed, gently rolling hills lies a significant deposit of gravel and other aggregates, coveted by mining companies for decades.
