OBH Client MLPA Helps Shed Light on Industry-Touted Aggregates Study

A series of recent pieces in the Detroit Free Press revealed the role Michigan aggregates industry played in urging MDOT to commission a study which has frequently been cited by the industry as demonstrating an imminent shortage of gravel in the state. The first story recounts how the Michigan Aggregates Association (MAA) communicated closely with MDOT officials to determine the scope of the study, identify potential firms to perform the work, and set the fee. To the east of Flint, Michigan lies a tiny village called Metamora. With just one stoplight and a population of 565, Metamora is already home to four gravel pits. Yet, Michigan lawmakers are thinking about reviving a bill that would force another 500-acre gravel pit into the rural area surrounding the village.

Last week the City of Mackinac Island filed papers to join the challenge initiated last summer by the Straits of Mackinac Alliance against the MDEQ’s decision to issue permits to Enbridge for the installation of 22 anchor supports to prop up the aging Line 5 petroleum pipeline which lies under the waters of the Straits of Mackinac.
